Day 4: Luang Prabang city tour

You have the option to wake up before dawn to witness and participate in offering alms to hundreds of saffron-robed monks – an awe-inspiring sight. Please tell your guide a day in advance if you wish to make an offering so he/she can prepare some food for you to hand over to the monks. This early morning ritual dates back generations in Laos. Watch the town come to life in the morning then return to the hotel for breakfast. (If you do not wish to make an offering, please keep an appropriate distance and observe the ritual in silence. Dress appropriately – shoulders, chest and legs should be covered).

Travel in style today in our classic 1969 vintage Mercedes Benz as we explore Luang Prabang. First drive to town and start your day with a visit to the Royal Palace, which is now a National Museum and houses the precious exhibits that used to be possessions of the former Laos Royal family. (Open from 8:30am to 11.30am and from 1.30pm to 3.30pm daily except on Tuesdays). Than at the bottom of Phou Sy Hill we take the time to climb to 328 steps to the top and enjoy the wonderful view over the town. Head back down to the car and drive along the length of town admiring the colonial architecture en route. Stop for a morning coffee or tea at the Colonial style French Bakery Le Baneton. Next continue with the exploration of the main Buddhist temples of Luang Prabang including Wat Xiengthong, a 16th century temple which epitomizes all the elegance and grace of Luang Prabang architecture and Wat Khili where you can observe the archives of Laos Buddhism.

Wooden canoes bobbing by the shore attached to bamboo poles can be seen everywhere while floats mark the location of nets and fish traps. Arrive at Pak Ou and explore the sanctuaries which consist of two large caves. Both repositories house thousands of Buddha images, which range from mere centimetres to two meters in height. Continue to Ban Muang Keo village and observe local weavers and whisky distillers honouring their timeworn traditional crafts before returning to Luang Prabang by car or by the same cruise.

Kayaks are available for exploring the Hai Quan Lagoon area allowing an up close look at the bay and the many islets. Later, lunch is served on board while cruising to Sung Sot (surprise) cave. Take some time to explore the cave where stalactites hanging from the high ceiling take on many interesting shapes and forms. Kayaks are also available in the afternoon around Luon cave area. Day 11: Siem Reap – Angkor Wat

 ANGKOR TEMPLE-MAIN CIRCUIT

Start the day early with a transfer to the picturesque Ta Prohm. This beautiful temple is overgrown with fig trees, giving a haunting yet exotic atmosphere. The magnificent roots of the trees have merged over the centuries with the temple’s huge stone blocks, emphasizing a ‘forgotten city’ feeling. Transfer mid morning to Preah Kahn temple, which is generally not as crowded as others in the Angkor complex. Built in the 12th century by King Jayavarman VII, it once housed over 100.000 officials and servants. Explore this magnificent structure before moving to the jewel of the Khmer Empire; Angkor Wat. Admire the sheer size of the temple and learn how the Khmer Empire prospered between the 9th and 13th centuries. Stroll through the intricately carved hallways that show hundreds of fine bas reliefs and discover shrines still in use today by the local people

Our guide for Angkor Wat is a renowned scholar of Khmer history who will give you an in depth history of the structure. After this intriguing visit, lunch is served at a local restaurant. Continue to Angkor Thom, the ancient city. Visit the Terrace of the Elephants, which served as a platform from where the King could welcome back his victorious army and the Terrace of the Leper King, which holds detailed carvings winding along a narrow passage way that leads to the Baphuon complex. Top off the day with a visit to the Ancient Royal City’s centre piece; the Bayon temple. As you approach, you will notice the enigmatic faces of former King Jayavarman VII looking into every direction. Late afternoon is a perfect time to visit this highlight as crowds usually flock elsewhere; leaving the Bayon standing majestically in the beautiful late afternoon quietly. Later return to Siem Reap for a well deserved rest

After breakfast, check out and transfer to the airport for flight to Phnom Penh. Upon arrival, meet and transfer to your hotel. Early check in is NOT included and subject to availability. Afternoon, take a short tour visiting one of the most important place of Cambodia modern history, a dark tourism site.

The peaceful stretch of green fields of Cheung Ek may not indicate what kinds of horrors have taken place there. Situated 17km from Phnom Penh town, Cheung Ek was made famous by the movie “The Killing Fields”. Nowadays, a large memorial has been built to commemorate the 17,000 victims who died here under the reign of Khmer Rouge leader, Pol Pot. The remnants inside the memorial and the mass graves that dot the area remind you of the suffering of the victims. This journey into Cambodia’s past will provide you with a background on the cruelty of the Khmer Rouge regime. It will also give you an appreciation of the struggle that Cambodian people have faced and their tremendous courage to move on and rebuild their nation.
